Exploring the Eastern Shore
The Eastern Shore has been designated by the United Nations as a Biosphere resource due to its unique mix of rural and wetland undeveloped land in such close proximity to the urban centers of the Richmond to Boston Corridor.
Fisherman's Lodge is centrally located on Virginia's Eastern Shore - making it a wonderful base for exploration of the historical, cultural and recreational opportunities available on the peninsula in a setting that is in another world and a far cry from the hectic pace, yet an escape which is only hours away.
Virginia's Eastern Shore is truly a "land between two waters." With the Atlantic Ocean to the East and the Chesapeake Bay to its West, the Eastern Shore is only 20 miles across at its widest point and 75 miles long. Consisting of two counties, Northampton in the south and Accomack in the north, the Eastern Shore makes up the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula, a historic source of vegetables and seafood for the tables of New York, Philadelphia, and Washington.
While US 13 runs the length of the peninsula and provides ready access to the area, once you arrive you should begin meandering the area's secondary roads and getting to know the real wealth of the Eastern Shore - our small towns, our friendly people, our restaurants and shops, our open spaces that provide bird and waterfowl sanctuaries, our historic homes, and our peaceful way of life. Whether your interest is exploring antique shops and old homes in quaint towns, taking a leisurely bicycle tour of back roads and open spaces, or challenging yourself on a serious golf course, the Eastern Shore can provide opportunities which will whet your appetite to return for more.
From the National Seashore at Assateague Island in the north to the soft shell crab farms and the old railroad terminal in Cape Charles in the south, the Eastern Shore has something for everyone. Follow links below to get some sense of the scope of the Eastern Shore.
